Aregbesola Applauds Jonathan For Initiative

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state has applauded former president Goodluck Jonathan for signing the act prohibiting female genital mutilation in Nigeria.
The governor hailed the initiative of Goodluck Jonathan at a forum on female genital mutilation organised by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities in Osogbo on Tuesday, November 10. The forum was in collaboration with Shericare Foundation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports Aregbesola saying female genital mutilation was a primitive act aimed at dominating women.
“Everybody must work hard to ensure that the practice is done away with. Besides the damage it has done to women, it has created health challenges like acute urinary retention, delivery complications, among others.
“We have not established any scientific advantage let alone any religion supporting the practise. It is just an inhuman design to suppress the other sex.”
Sherifat who is the president of Shericare foundation and the wife of the governor also described the practice as primitive.
She added that wives of governors and relevant organization should ensure strict measures in the compliance of the existing law on female genital mutilation.
. It has been criminalised in most western countries.
